Explore Sri Lanka’s hill capital and visit most of the key sights in and around the city. For Buddhists in Sri Lanka and around the world, Kandy is one of the holiest places as it houses the Temple of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.
Kandy is an important city in Sri Lanka and the second largest city in the country after Colombo. It is located 115 km from the capital Colombo. According to the chronicles, this city was called “Kanda Udarata & Maha Nuwara” as it was the last kingdom of the country. Kandy is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, especially for those who follow the Theravada school. The Kandy Perahera is the busiest time for religious visitors and is also considered the most colorful pageant in the world. The city also has the charm of being surrounded by tropical plantations in the hills, and the most important cash crop is Ceylon tea, samples of which can be easily purchased in the city.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It was built within the royal palace complex, housing the only relic of Buddha, a tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. The relic has played an important role in local politics since antiquity, and it is believed that whoever possesses the relic holds the government of the country, which led the ancient kings to protect it with great effort. Kandy was the capital of the Sinhalese kings from 1592 to 1815, fortified by the terrain of the mountains, which was difficult to access. Today, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly due to the temple.
